English Speaking Acupuncture Clinic

A honeymoon or couple’s trip to Tokyo does not have to mean racing between Shibuya crossing and Shinjuku towers. East Tokyo, along the Sumida River, is made for a slow day together: a quiet Edo-era garden in the morning, coffee in a canal-side neighbourhood, a rickshaw ride through Asakusa, the river at dusk and Tokyo Skytree lit up at night. This guide links those stops into one relaxed romantic Tokyo itinerary for couples, and explains how booking two back-to-back sessions at our clinic works if one of you (or both) needs a reset after the flight.

Why east Tokyo works so well for couples

Most first-time itineraries pack Asakusa, Skytree and a shrine into a single busy day. We already have one of those: our one-day east Tokyo itinerary. This one is different. It has fewer stops, more sitting down, and a deliberate evening finish, because the Sumida River is at its best after sunset.

  • Short hops: Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, Asakusa and Skytree are all on, or one change from, the Hanzomon and Toei Asakusa subway lines.
  • Lower crowds: gardens and side streets in Koto and Sumida wards are calm even on weekends.
  • Built-in views: the Sumida River Walk, Tokyo Mizumachi and Skytree are designed to light up together in the evening.

The slow day at a glance

Morning: Kiyosumi Teien and Kiyosumi-Shirakawa

Kiyosumi Teien is a strolling garden of about 81,000 square metres, laid out around a large pond. Mitsubishi founder Iwasaki Yataro bought the land in 1878, and the stones he collected from all over Japan are still the highlight. The best moment for couples is the iso-watari, a line of stepping stones along the pond edge, where carp and turtles drift right up to your feet. The Ryotei, a teahouse-style building over the water, makes a lovely photo from across the pond.

  • Hours: 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30). Closed December 29 to January 1.
  • Admission: ¥150 for adults, ¥70 for visitors aged 65 and over.
  • Access: 3 minutes on foot from Kiyosumi-shirakawa Station (Hanzomon Line and Toei Oedo Line).

Afterwards, wander the canal streets of Kiyosumi-Shirakawa. The area became known as a coffee neighbourhood after Blue Bottle Coffee opened its first café outside the United States here in 2015, and small roasters and galleries have followed. For an early lunch, look for fukagawa-meshi, rice with clams, a simple Edo-period dish from this old riverside district that you rarely see elsewhere in Tokyo.

From autumn to early winter, Kiyosumi Teien is also one of the calmer leaf-viewing spots in east Tokyo; see our autumn leaves in east Tokyo guide.

How does a couples booking work at Fuji Wellness?

Honeymoons involve long flights, heavy suitcases and a lot of walking, and we hear from couples staying in Asakusa who ask to book two sessions one after the other. Often each person has a different concern, for example one partner has a stiff lower back from the flight and the other has a knee that complains on stairs. Some couples also bring X-ray results or notes from their doctor at home.

Here is how it usually works:

  1. Message us ahead through the contact page or WhatsApp with your preferred date, both names and a line about each person’s concerns.
  2. We schedule consecutive appointments, so one of you is seen while the other relaxes in the waiting area, then you swap. Each person has their own consultation in English (or Vietnamese or Japanese).
  3. Bring anything relevant: recent scans, a list of medications, or a note of old injuries. It makes the consultation quicker and safer.
  4. Plan for a longer visit than a single booking. We will confirm the timing when we reply.

Each partner is booked as an individual first visit (¥5,500 each for a first visit). Sessions are by appointment only, and the clinic is closed on Fridays.

Acupuncture is not a substitute for medical care. Research on it for chronic back and neck pain is mixed, with some studies showing modest short-term benefit; the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health has a balanced overview. Many visitors simply book a session to rest and loosen up in the middle of a long trip. If one of you has calf swelling, chest pain or shortness of breath after the flight, see a doctor first; the CDC explains the warning signs of blood clots.

Getting here: from Kiyosumi-shirakawa, take the Hanzomon Line two stops to Kinshicho, then Toei bus 錦25 or 錦27 from the South Exit to Komatsugawa-keisatsusho-mae (about 15 minutes), a 3-minute walk from the clinic. From Asakusa, allow about 40 minutes by train and bus, or around 25 minutes by taxi. Full details are in our access guide.

Dusk: Sumida River Walk and Tokyo Mizumachi

Aim to reach the river shortly before sunset. The Sumida River Walk is a 160-metre pedestrian bridge that runs beside the Tobu railway line between Asakusa and the Skytree side of the river. It opened in 2020, is open from 7:00 to 22:00, and has a small glass floor panel where you can watch boats pass underneath. As the light fades, the bridge and Skytree are lit up together.

On the Skytree side, Tokyo Mizumachi is a row of cafés, bakeries and shops tucked under the railway arches along the Kitajukken River. It is a pleasant, unhurried walk of about 10 to 15 minutes to the foot of the tower, with good photo angles of Skytree reflected in the water.

Night: Tokyo Skytree after dark

Going up Tokyo Skytree at night is one of the most romantic views in the city: an unbroken carpet of lights from the Tembo Deck at 350 metres, and from the Tembo Galleria at 450 metres if you buy the combined ticket. The decks are generally open until 22:00 with last entry an hour before, but hours change by season, so check the official site and buy timed tickets online for weekend evenings.

If you would rather see the tower than stand on it, the riverbank below Azuma Bridge and the Sumida River Walk itself both give a clear view of Skytree’s evening lighting.

A rickshaw ride and a river cruise

Asakusa by rickshaw

A jinrikisha (rickshaw) ride is a classic couple’s experience in Asakusa. The rickshaws seat two, and the pullers, many of whom speak some English, act as guides, taking you down back streets you would probably not find alone and stopping for photos. Courses range from a short loop of around 10–15 minutes to an hour or more. Operators such as Ebisuya generally run from morning until around sunset, so book a morning slot or ride before your dusk walk on the weekend version below.

On the water

Tokyo Cruise water buses leave from the Azumabashi pier in Asakusa and travel down the Sumida River under a series of bridges to Hama-rikyu and Hinode Pier, taking about 35–50 minutes. Some boats continue to Odaiba. There are only a few departures a day, so check the timetable and buy tickets early. It is a relaxing way to rest your legs while still sightseeing.

Weekend version and dinner ideas

On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays the clinic is open 8:00–12:00 only, so reverse the day:

  1. 8:30 — back-to-back sessions at Fuji Wellness.
  2. 11:30 — lunch in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, then Kiyosumi Teien.
  3. 14:30 — Asakusa by rickshaw (Hanzomon Line to Oshiage, then a short ride on the Toei Asakusa Line, or a taxi).
  4. Dusk — cross the Sumida River Walk to Tokyo Mizumachi and Skytree.

For dinner:

  • Solamachi Dining Skytree View (30F–31F): a floor of restaurants about 150 metres up at the foot of the tower, with Japanese, Italian, Chinese and yakiniku options and views of the lit-up tower. Booking ahead is wise for anniversaries.
  • Tokyo Mizumachi: relaxed riverside cafés and casual dining, good if you are tired.
  • Asakusa: small tempura, soba and izakaya places in the side streets; after 20:00 the area is much quieter than in the day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tokyo a good honeymoon destination?

Yes. Tokyo is safe, easy to get around and has a wide range of hotels and restaurants. Pairing a lively area like Shinjuku with a slower east Tokyo day along the Sumida River gives couples both energy and calm, and short trips to Hakone or Kyoto add variety.

What is the most romantic thing to do in east Tokyo?

Many couples enjoy walking the Sumida River Walk at dusk and then seeing Tokyo Skytree at night, either from the observation decks or from the riverbank. A morning rickshaw ride in Asakusa and a quiet stroll in Kiyosumi Teien are also popular.

Can couples book acupuncture sessions together in Tokyo?

At Fuji Wellness, couples usually book two back-to-back appointments. Each person has their own consultation in English, Vietnamese or Japanese. Send both names and each person’s main concern when you book through the contact page or WhatsApp, and bring any recent medical results.

How far is Fuji Wellness from Asakusa?

About 40 minutes by public transport (Toei Asakusa Line to Oshiage, Hanzomon Line to Kinshicho, then Toei bus 錦25 or 錦27), or around 25 minutes by taxi.

Do Asakusa rickshaws run at night?

Most rickshaw operators in Asakusa run from morning until around sunset, so plan your ride for the morning or early afternoon and save the evening for the river and Skytree.
