Hi, Sunny Sensei here.
Last time I wrote about stiff necks in the cold — today we go one step further, and this one matters more: which pain is just tiredness, and which pain is genuinely “not fine”.
Now, today’s main thing: neck and shoulder pain — which kind is just tiredness, and which kind genuinely means “get this checked, soon”.
Sound familiar? A whole shift of bending down and looking up, reaching overhead, carrying loads from one place to another — on a site or a factory floor. By the end of the shift your neck is stiff, your shoulders feel like they weigh extra kilos, and back at your room all you want is to lie down.
Most aches from physical work ease with proper rest and gentle movement. But some kinds of pain are not “just tiredness”, and ignoring them for months only makes things harder — especially when your job needs your strength every day. Please watch for these five signs:
- Pain that travels down your arm or into your hand, not just around the neck and shoulders.
- Numbness or tingling in your hand, or a weaker grip — loads and tools don’t feel as secure in your hands as before.
- Headaches or dizziness that keep coming with it, again and again.
- Morning neck stiffness lasting many days, with clearly reduced head movement.
- Pain that started after a fall or accident at work, or that is getting worse quickly.
Meanwhile, small things that stop your shoulders from carrying the whole shift: drop and loosen your shoulders instead of bracing them up out of habit, switch sides when carrying instead of loading one side with everything, use breaks for a few minutes of gentle stretching and neck movement, and put a warm compress on your shoulders for 10–15 minutes in the evening.
Remember: numbness or weakness in the hand means you should be checked in person sooner rather than later — for a physical worker, a weaker hand affects your job and your safety directly.
This weekend — often your one real day off — come in and have your neck and shoulders properly looked at:
